Since the community took ownership of The Dog Inn at Belthorn in September 2015, one thing has always been clear — this place was never just a pub. It was a space with potential to become something much more: a community hub, a safe haven, a place to belong. And so began the ambitious refurbishment journey.
A Community Effort
Before anything else, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped along the way. From skilled tradespeople to first-time DIYers, from the grants team to the tea makers, from the planners to the painters — every contribution has been invaluable.
We’ve come a long way, but our work isn’t done. As future phases get underway, we’ll be calling on our brilliant community once more to get involved, so please keep an eye out!
The Plan: Four Phases of Transformation
Right from the start, we committed to a long-term refurbishment plan, broken down into four key areas:
- The Pub
- Community Rooms
- Restaurant
- Community Gardens
A full building condition survey was commissioned before purchase, allowing us to understand what needed doing — and what it would cost. This vital document helped secure grant funding from various sources, including the ever-supportive Pub is the Hub.
Despite the chaos of refurbishment, we still opened our doors to host a Macmillan Coffee Morning in September 2015, raising nearly £400. That event set the tone: community first, always.
A New Look, A New Brand
Alongside the building work, we knew The Dog Inn needed a fresh identity. Our marketing team worked with local residents to create a brand that reflects who we are. That new look now proudly features on our signage, website, social media, and printed materials.
The Coffee Shop & Provisions Store
One of the first things the community asked for was a daytime coffee space and a basic provisions store. Somewhere to meet for a chat, grab a loaf of bread, or pick up some essentials — especially important in winter when Belthorn can get cut off.
We converted a section of the original pub into a purpose-built coffee shop. It wasn’t easy — thick walls, no plumbing, and limited utilities — but we did it. And now, the shop provides everything from teas and coffees to eggs, bread, milk, and emergency items.
Reviving the Pub Area
Getting the pub open quickly was crucial. By November 2015, we were ready — and what a transformation it was!
- New insulated ceiling
- Improved lighting
- Refurbished bar
- Exposed original beams
- Cleaned internal stonework
- Cosy wood-burning stove
- Brand-new fire alarm and CCTV systems
- Soft furnishings and welcoming décor
Today, we host monthly open mic nights, live music, craft sessions, and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere that makes everyone feel at home.
Building Community Rooms
Upstairs, former living areas have been converted into flexible community rooms — a space that the community truly shaped.
Whether it’s for kids’ clubs, church services, meetings, a library or a storage area, the possibilities are endless. After securing change-of-use approval from both Hyndburn and Blackburn with Darwen Councils (yes, The Dog Inn straddles both!), we got to work knocking down walls, refitting bathrooms, and refreshing kitchens.
Reimagining the Restaurant
What used to be a workshop is now a light, spacious restaurant with views to the south and west. We removed the false ceiling and the dividing stone wall, creating a more open and welcoming dining space with a contemporary finish. It’s now a stunning room perfect for casual meals, special events, and everything in between.
Creating the Community Gardens
Behind the pub, we have nearly two acres of land — a rare and beautiful opportunity. Community feedback helped shape the vision: a community garden, beer garden, grazing space, and a dedicated area for village events like the bonfire night.
Local farmers kindly helped us level the land, and we’ve already planted over 400 hedging plants to provide shelter and structure in the years ahead.
What’s Next?
Refurbishment is never truly “finished.” But with each wall painted, each hedge planted, and each coffee poured, The Dog Inn continues to grow into the heart of Belthorn.
